What’s a Collections Care Specialist?

Iget asked this question a lot when I tell people I’m a Collections Care Specialist, “what do you do?”

The job title Collections Care Specialist is relatively new in the lexicon of museum and cultural heritage work, but the work that goes with it has been around a long time. I like to trace it back to the Hellenistic age and the great Library of Alexandria, although it surely stretches back to at least ancient Egypt.

The title has emerged recently to describe a worker in the cultural heritage sector, who has general knowledge and specialized skills in an array of disciplines related to object preservation, and collection access. Museum people will recognize similarities to preparator or technician roles, but Collections Care Specialist (CCS) work expands beyond those traditional boundaries.
