Big Skies

The unique perspective of a truck driver is one often passed over when considering the best and most beautiful places in the country. Access to much of what the United States has to offer is restricted to cars, offering no welcome to what are seen as 80,000-pound reminders of the global energy, economy, and environmental crises. Ocean vistas are traded for concrete highways walled off a by sparse, haggard tree line that does its best to hide the unsightly congestion. Gleaming metal signs point the way to national parks that are just out of sight beyond the clusters of gas stations and truck stops whose lights dull the stars in the sky to smudges. The world flashes by, offering promises of scenic lookout points — “NO TRUCK PARKING” — and small-town shops purveying local food and charm — “NO TRUCKS.” One tends to feel they’ve traveled the country and missed it, at the same time.

Website
