Who Amongst Us?

Diminished. I heard that word, conveying as it does that sense of decline, a decline already in motion, like a step down that can’t be reversed. When a person or thing is “diminished,” can it reverse itself?

I heard that word as a statement about what the United State’s reputation is as it is seen by Russian and Chinese leaders. Political pressures and aggression against whatever “the free world” represents today have increased in measure to the extent that the United States is “diminished.” Nature, after all, abhors a vacuum.

Our political situation, rife with extremists, replete with factionalism, makes us appear ineffectual. We are ineffectual, at home and abroad. We can not be effective abroad if we are not effective at home; our house is pretty divided, and perhaps it can not stand.
