18 months ago, I decided to learn about game development. I set a goal for myself to finish my first project and release it no matter what, in order to learn as much as possible about the process of creating and launching a video game. My game is not among the best on the market, and it’s not even complete yet. But I believe I’ve learned some things that will be useful for my next project, and I hope they might be helpful to you as well. Obviously, this is my experience, everything is subjective, with exceptions to every rule.
My game is called Bernie´s Adventures and you can try it now on Android.
You can’t plan without knowing the process.
From the beginning, I aimed not to exceed the scope of the project. I have heard many times that one of the main problems for novice developers is over-scoping. So, I started my first project by repeating to myself, “I’ll do something small.” The challenge lies in how to plan something “small” if you’ve never done it before. Now, I try to map out all aspects of the project and watch tutorials to determine if it’s within my ability to do it and how long it will take.
