The World Cup took place across the cities of Australia and New Zealand. I got tickets to all the Matildas games I could see. I was surprised when they sold out only a few weeks after they were released. That should’ve been the first sign that this was going to be a big deal for women’s sport.
The cup began for the Matildas and the first game broke records. Almost 2 million people watched, making it the most watched women’s sport in Australian history. The stadium was also sold out with 75,784 seats, making it the largest crowd for a Matildas game and the ninth-largest attendance for women’s football of all time. That was only the beginning.
