This is a companion piece to my article The casual ultra-violence of the English language, which is about the extremely violent phrases we use in situations that don’t require violence at all. There are tons of them, and once you start noticing, I think you’ll be amazed at what you see.
While not always directly violent, I also notice a lot of negativity and punishment (/scarcity/victim) language, especially among Boomers. (This is simply an observation based on my personal experience.) I am very familiar with these kinds of conversations, which usually seem to happen in workplace settings; I suppose it makes sense as a place I’d be interacting with multiple people of this generation at once.
