Have you ever heard of a “tiger mom”?
It’s the term for a style of strict Asian parenting that goes so far that some people claim this form of parenting is harsh and abusive.
But “tiger mom” as a Chinese term, is about as Chinese as fortune cookies.
That is to say, it’s not Chinese at all.
At least, not linguistically.
The term actually comes from Chinese-American college professor Amy Chua’s book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother.
