Why Are People With “Old Money” So Happy? (Hint: it’s not the money)

An influencer named Bella Dane just went viral with her observations about people with old money.

She gained these insights during a summer working at an elite country club. She noted how people with old money seemed happier and more grounded than the average person. Those with old money were polite and respectful. They behaved the opposite of brash “new money.” They also behaved very differently than those in the middle class.

As someone who has worked and socialized with old money, I found her observations to be on point. She described how old money behaves. I would like to explain why old money behaves that way.

The reason Old Money behaves in such a genteel fashion is this:

It is more difficult to keep wealth than it is to create it in the first place. Making money is easy; keeping it is hard. The attributes required to safeguard wealth across generations are also, by happy coincidence, the same attributes that allow one to be a grounded and respectful person.

It is not the money itself that makes Old Money happy. It is the way they live their life that makes them happy.

A parallel can be drawn with people who enjoy good health. Healthy people live their lives in accordance with a set of principles that is also congruent with living a happy life. They get adequate rest. They treat their body well. They exercise, which is good for both the mind and body. They don’t abuse their body with drugs and alcohol.
