Considering tigers are larger than lions and have bigger brains, it&rsquo;s tough to argue. But the apotheosis of tigers in China goes far deeper than sheer size or smarts.</p> <p>Officially known as the South China tiger, the Chinese tiger dwelt in the forests of Hunan, Jiangxi, and other southern provinces. Though smaller than its Bengal and Siberian cousins, the Chinese tiger was still apex predator, rightly feared by man. But alongside this fear was reverence. The stripes on a tiger&rsquo;s forehead closely resemble the Chinese writing for &ldquo;king&rdquo; (<strong>王</strong>), and no animal in the land could contest its might.
