Day 4. Plaything: Checkmate King 2, this is White Rook, over ???

As a kid, I owned guns, not real guns but toy guns. Being from the Wild West in Wyoming, one of the annual events was Cheyenne Frontier Days. That was a week-long celebration that glorified westward expansion, cowboys, and ranching.

I went through a western gun phase, but when I became older in the 1960s, the Vietnam War was going full blast, and World War II-inspired TV shows aired like Combat! It was about a group of American soldiers led by Sgt. Chip Saunders. His superior officer was Lt. Gil Hanley.

The shows were less about the War that was a backdrop and more about stories about the human condition. Some episodes had anti-war commentary. I didn’t figure that stuff out until I was older and Combat! was in syndication. Now, the stories are more interesting to me than the weaponry.
