The First LSD Trip-Sitter Was a Woman

LSD-25 was the 25th alkaloid synthesized from the Ergot fungus by Albert Hofmann, who worked in a lab that had a policy of testing the substances they produced in the lab team. In 1943, Hofmann intentionally consumed a 250-microgram dose of LSD-25 and embarked on the first-ever LSD trip. Feeling that he underestimated the effects of this new-found psychedelic substance, he asked his assistant (21-year-old Susi Ramstein) to accompany him home.

Because of the World War climate in Europe, there was a nationwide petrol rationing in Switzerland, and Hofmann and Susi had to ride their bikes to work. When the effects of the LSD became too acute to ignore, Hofmann decided he should go home, and since his wife was not home, Suzi was fundamental in guiding Hofmann to a meaningful and comfortable trip.
