From Transgender Tipping Point to Nightmare

I try to write about things I experience and attend to personally. It gives me agency and a sense of control over my little corner of life. I felt much more involved beyond that little corner after the euphoria of the “Transgender Tipping Point” in 2014 with Lavern Cox on the cover of Time magazine. Rather than burning brighter, those moments of community-wide hope for a welcoming future have consistently dimmed. Much of that dimming has been the unhinged response from conservative media that filtered down through public opinion and into political rhetoric. Some of it has been a response to the increased visibility of this community finally feeling safe and escaping our closets. Each time I’ve attempted to start a new supportive essay I’m distracted by the rapidly growing and well funded efforts to expand disinformation, anger and hate that is being directed at me and my transgender siblings.
