The Art of Design: Tinker Hatfield

I found the episode on Tinker Hatfield, the Nike footwear designer, particularly engaging. I’m not a huge shoe/trainer guy, although I am aware of the huge sneaker culture. I’ve always tended to opt for the less flashy Chuck Taylor All Star, but I found the whole design thinking behind things such as the Nike Air Max, the Air Jordans and E.A.R.L. (Electro Adaptive Reactive Lacing) fascinating.

Hatfield trained as an athlete specialising in pole-vault before picking up an injury and discovering he could draw. He developed these skills along with a strong design ethic whilst studying to become an Architect. The passion and understanding he had for athletics transferred beautifully into footwear design and clearly contributed to his massive success with Nike. His former coach (and the co-founder of Nike) Bill Bowerman was the reason for him getting put forward for the job at Nike.
