There’s No Such Thing As a Free Lunch

Today, when I brought Sophie home from school, she had a little bit of her packed lunch left over and decided to eat it as her after-school snack.

“I have a question,” she began. This is how Sophie often likes to get my attention when I’m working.

“What’s that?” I asked.

“Did you ever eat your leftovers from lunch for your after-school snack?”

“Oh, no… I wasn’t able to bring a lunch from home when I was your age.”

Sophie’s eyes and mouth gaped at me in horror.

I explained that when I was a kid, we often didn’t have enough food. I went to a public school that provided free or reduced lunches to students from poor families, but we had to apply for that assistance every year, and it was very embarrassing if our classmates learned that we were on the free lunch program. We were teased and talked about.
