Black Holes: Don’t Stare Into the Void

Why is it when we discuss falling into a black hole, we always seem to stare directly into them? The movie interstellar watches the protagonist fall into one. My physics textbooks all seem to talk about what you would see falling in, watching the event horizon approach. Most talks I’ve heard discussing this concept talk from this same perspective. But why?

I’d be terrified. I wouldn’t do that. I’d turn around so I wouldn’t have to watch my impending doom. I don’t need that kind of negativity in my life. But if all the examples we tend to discuss revolve around what we’d see staring into the maw of this cosmological monster, then what would we see if we turned our backs to it?
