Taking Responsibility: The Key to Success

Are you stuck at work on a project, waiting for someone else to step up and take charge? Are you in a tense work relationship and expecting the other side would take responsibility and settle the problem? Maybe you’re looking for a quick cure to improve your attention and productivity, or an unexpected answer to your problems. One of the most typical roadblocks to advancement is our propensity to wait for others to act, to carry the blame, or to lead the way. But, more often than not, assistance does not arrive on its own.

I got the pleasure of hearing Tal Ben-Shahar speak on a subject that transformed my outlook on personal responsibility. He credited this concept to Nathaniel Branden, a forefather of the self-esteem movement. Taking responsibility, according to Branden, is the first step in developing a healthy sense of self. This shift occurs when we accept the fact that “no one is coming.”

The burden of duty is completely on your shoulders. It all starts with the concept that you, as an individual, are responsible for the quality and timeliness of a result, even when working with others. This does not necessarily indicate that you have power over a project, nor does it suggest that you should work alone. What it does mean is that you are responsible for taking action and delivering outcomes.
