The Problem with Substack Part 2 of 2

I follow 57 different Substack newsletters. If we assume they would all charge the minimum $5/month for a premium subscription, following them all would total $285/month. Even if I had the kind of money that I could afford to spend that amount just on following content creators on Substack, I wouldn’t. Even if I narrowed it down to 10 favorites at $50/month, I could probably figure it out, but why would I want to? I know I wouldn’t. With other, real expenses like rent, utilities, etc. I’m not the only one. Following every Substack creator that you’d like to, is not affordable for most people.

At the same time, there are some very talented creators on Substack providing content that is WORTH more than the $5/month or $50/year. The problem is not that the content creators don’t deserve to get paid. They do. I see the biggest weakness of Substack to be the same thing that is also what attracts most content creators, ease of use and doing it all in one place. The problem is, when you try to be everything to everyone, eventually things break down and something doesn’t add up.

Visit Now
