My Mother, a Newsletter, and the Shocking Confession

Returning to this family in 2019 should have been joyous. I enjoyed every second working with our youth in 2013–2015. We were quite busy, often with a waitlist for 18/19-year-old beds and binders of referrals. It was not like that upon returning as part-time Residential Counselor at the Shelter on Windsor Avenue in Toms River, NJ. I was also fortunate to work at the Transitional Living Program (TLP) too, on an as needed basis.

Employees were unhappy though, with long resentment lists, and unpredictable leadership. Sid Colvin, who I knew from my own time at the Shelter, retired as Executive Director (E.D.) in 2013. Jerry Kilbane was the first replacement, followed by John Piscal. Piscal’s hiring also changed the structure of leadership responsibilities. The E.D. position became divided as the Program Director responsibilities were separated. This allowed the E.D. to focus on financial growth and stability.
