The Torn Posters in the Paris Metro

What’s interesting about the vandalism is just how dedicated and deliberate it tends to be. Rather than posters bearing rips at random, they’re often torn in places carefully chosen for maximum visual effect. You can tell that whoever is going around creating these lacerations does so with an eye to artistic expression. These are not your average vandals; they’re actually quite talented at what they do.

Although I’ve used quite a few underground railway systems, it’s only in Paris that I’ve come across such a cultural phenomenon. And I think I know why this is the case. Basically, it has to do with the way that Paris puts up ads. As the RATP, the organisation in charge of Paris’ public transport systems, simply glues advertising posters on top of each other, you can always find a whole series of ads below the current one. That is, until a metro employee comes and removes all of them in one fell swoop.

Website
