The U.S. News and World Report has been publishing a “Best Country Overall” ranking based on a sprawling set of criteria since 2016. The top eight countries in the ranking have been mostly uniform in that period.

The U.S. lost ground during the Trump years of 2017–2020, plummeting to 7th or 8th place, which affects its overall average. This year it pulled back up to 5th place; in 2016 and 2022 it was in 4th place. It gained points for indicators of quality of life and social purpose. Increases in the entrepreneurship as well as the cultural and natural heritage scores also saw the country improve its standing opposite other nations that year, leading to a much higher score when comparing to previous years.

The U.S. topped the chart for “power and agility.” Nice.

Speaking of ‘nice’ Canada maintained its constant “Number 2” ranking, behind Switzerland. Canada would never push forward. Bad form. We’re even the second-largest country. Sorry. But we are the Number One country with a Serious ($multi-trillion) economy.
