Why White People Continue to Ignore The Context of MLK's Words
<p>It’s no secret that White people are addicted to cherry-picking aspects of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speeches. They seem to experience a strange delight or <a href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/schadenfreude" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">schadenfreude</a> from decontextualizing the words of such an awe-inspiring Black man who is respected by so many, of twisting his quotes, forcing them to fit their narrative. At this point, White people have committed this faux pas so many times they’ve tainted the well, making it difficult for some students to separate fact from fiction in terms of assessing King’s legacy. The die has been cast. And before you say, “Not all White people misquote King,” consider the harm that many White people indeed cause by engaging in this intellectually dishonest exercise.</p>
