101 Zen Stories: Story # 26: Trading Dialogue For Lodging — The One-Eyed Monk’s Misunderstanding

<p>There was a Buddhist temple in northern Japan where two monk brothers lived. The elder brother was very knowledgeable, while the younger brother was not so bright and had only one eye.</p> <p>One day, a traveling monk came to the temple and challenged them to a debate about Buddhism in order to earn lodging. The elder brother was tired from studying, so he told the one-eyed younger brother to debate in his place. &ldquo;Go and request the dialogue in silence,&rdquo; the elder said.</p> <p>The young monk and the traveler sat down at the shrine. Soon after, the traveler got up and told the elder brother, &ldquo;Your young brother is amazing.
