The Miracle of Amsterdam
<p>Somewhere in March of the year 1345, in a house on Die Lane — modern Kalverstraat — a devout catholic man laid on his bed at death’s door. Fearing the worst, the man called the priest of what is today known as the Old Church to give him the sacrament of the Holy Communion one last time. Shortly after, he vomited and the women who were taking care of him were surprised to see that the Eucharist reemerged from his mouth whole. One of his nurses threw the vomit in the fire, but when she came back in the morning she saw that the consecrated host had not burnt. Upset, she reached for the host and retrieved it without burning herself.</p>
