What would happen if the oceans were made out of mercury?

First off, literally anything that has ever sunk over the millennia would rise to the surface, since the density of mercury is very high and any object would receive significant hydrostatic buoyancy because of Archimedes’ principle. Any ship would tip over and any living thing that lives in the ocean would be reduced to a drifting boa.

The higher density of mercury would also imply an increase in the mass of the planet by about 0.25 percent. Significant, but not enough to drastically change the earth’s orbit and its gravity. It is possible, however, that the additional weight pressing down on the earth’s crust and mantle could cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions across the globe.
