<p>The open ocean&mdash;strangely enough&mdash;is the marine equivalent of a&nbsp;<em>&ldquo;desert.&rdquo;</em>&nbsp;While these deserts are in fact comprised of water, they share the same relative lack of&nbsp;<strong>biodiversity</strong>&nbsp;and low level of&nbsp;<strong>primary productivity</strong>.
