Living Alaska — What Is it Like Living in Ketchikan, Alaska?

I moved to Alaska 14 months ago. I rode here on a bicycle from San Francisco, California. I loved the ride up the coast, I loved the ferry ride up the Inside Passage, I did not love my job back in the city. But why did I move to Alaska? I have been asked that a hundred time in the past year. I have been asked “why Ketchikan, Alaska?” five times in the past two weeks.

Good Timing

I arrived in Ketchikan, Alaska July 9, 2021. As I walked my bike off the ferry onto dry land in Alaska for the first time, I received an email. The email stated that my application for a job with the State of Alaska on the Ferry I disembarked literally seconds ago was accepted. I was offered a job two seconds after setting foot in Alaska. Not bad timing.
