Review: Hairspray

Since it opened on Broadway in 2002, the music of Hairspray has been in and out of the zeitgeist. Based on the 1988 film of the same name, the musical ran for almost seven years, completed numerous American national tours and had productions on West End and in Australia. The last Australian production was in 2010 after the boom of the musical film starring the likes of Zac Efron, Michelle Pfieffer, Queen Latifah and John Travolta in drag.

For someone like me who spent their teenage years in the ’00s, Hairspray was a musical theatre kid’s dream. It spoke to anyone who felt like they were an outsider and told them to let go of the past and say hello to the love in their heart. In this spritely Australian production, John Frost AM and Crossroads Live has brought the original Direction by Jack O’Brien and original Choreography by Jerry Mitchell to the Sydney Lyric stage with support from Matt Lenz and Dominic Shaw and it’s an absolute hoot.
