Humanity in Sufism is primarily thought of as a square: a simple object held together by four pivots/corners. These pivots are fallible in reality; a square requires them and when visualized in carpentry, they tend to break at a certain limit. These four corners are simultaneously associated with the four cardinal directions, the four movements (front, back, left, and right), the four rivers (Indus, Nile, the Yellow River, and Tigris/Euphrates), and the four elemental forces (earth, wind, water, and fire).</p>
