Nintendo Switch OLED Spotlight: Rebel Galaxy Outlaw

When the Nintendo Switch OLED was first announced way back in 2021, I wrote a piece calling it a messy cash grab. Then, a number of months later — I bought one for myself as a Christmas present.

I like the Switch in general as a platform, but even after all this time with the OLED in my house, I can’t automatically recommend the step-up version for new customers. It has identical innards to the cheaper Switch models, and its magnesium backplate, louder speakers, and larger more ventilated dock (that was probably supposed to house a more powerful machine) don’t do enough to justify its price premium.

The OLED screen, however, is pretty great. Hilariously, it doesn’t get as bright in terms of raw luminance as the standard LCD screen on the much more affordable Switch Lite, but its response time and depth of color contrast are excellent. It’s almost enough to justify the thing — as long as you mostly plan to use the system in portable mode.

Visit Now
