A French in America

One of the biggest complaints from many Americans who have stayed in France is that they had a hard time making new friends. Some have often told me that they have made many efforts, but they have never managed to really make French friends. It is super difficult. The French keep to themselves.

At the end of 2009, I had just returned to Paris after covering the Great Financial Crisis for Agence France-Presse in the New York bureau. One evening, I was having a drink in a bar in the trendy Marais district, not far from the City Hall. The Marais is one of the neighborhoods which attracts the most American people visiting or living in Paris. I was there with my friends Michaël and Éric. We were chatting when a scene caught my attention.
