New Managers: How do you manage a more experienced team?

You’re a new manager to a team. You want to make a difference, start off well but you might be worried about your age, lack of experience as a manger, lack of experience in the field of work or lack of experience with people.

You might be worried that people won’t trust your judgement, won’t value your opinion, will go around you to make things happen, which could lead to feeling that you’re not doing your role effectively. You’re an imposter, and your team know it!

Don’t panic.

This is a normal feeling for many new managers. So what can you do to help?

Embrace patience — your role is to support people to get more out of a team collaborating together. It takes time to understand each person. And so

Listen first — Spend time listening to your new team. What works, what doesn’t, where pinch points are and where success usually happens.

Continuous learning — Spend your own time if needs be, learning about the team your support’s individual roles. You don’t need to be able to do their job, but you do need to be able to engage in conversation to problem solve. If they are having to explain everything, then they will avoid you.

Value beyond technical expertise — Find out where you can offer value outside of problem solving technical issues. Can you support with HR, work life issues, managing internal relationships? Don’t play down the value a manager can provide if they are willing to listen and act upon the issues presented by their team. There are many managers that don’t.

Visit Now
