Deborah Tannen: Explaining Why Talk So Often Fails
<p>Eli Tannen was a book-lover who believed that there’s no reason to raise your voice when you’re talking to someone you love, and when he felt angry, he tried to express that anger in quiet, rational terms. He felt a dislike, bordering on contempt, for people who did a lot of shouting in the home.</p>
<p>As the youngest child, Deborah strained to keep up with the verbal gymnastics in the house. She contracted mumps which left her somewhat deaf. Having to strain to hear people made her concentrate even more on what people were saying, which led, indirectly, to being interested in HOW people say things.</p>
