DAWNA KIM’s Top Picks from Frieze Seoul Viewing Room 2023

“This piece immediately evokes a sense of summertime nostalgia, even though I haven’t personally lived through it; it’s a feeling I’ve undoubtedly experienced. It reminds me of Jonah Hill’s ‘Mid 90s’ and the broader themes of youth, camaraderie, and the drive (or in this case, biking) to keep moving forward in the midst of it all. Cue ‘Biking’ by Frank Ocean, but the (Solo) version, because Jay Z’s verse is Just Zzz.”

“While this painting portrays a woman covering her face and gesturing elsewhere, perhaps in an attempt to divert attention from underlying feelings of embarrassment or anxiety, I find myself in an ironic moment of introspection. The close-up’s muddy and almost chalky definition, along with its dominating skin tones, imparts a raw, human touch. It makes me feel safe to be vulnerable and authentic. Cue ‘Numb’ by Men I Trust for a moment of stillness and sincere sorrow.”
