A Tale of Two Cities: How Rotterdam Evolved into a Counterpoint of Amsterdam
<p>The Netherlands, being as small of a country as it is, it’s no surprise that there are only three major cities: the capital of Amsterdam, its companion city of Rotterdam, and the administrative city of The Hague. Amsterdam and Rotterdam have each had a long history marked with conflict, but the destruction of most of Rotterdam during WWII has launched it into a spacious and modern Western city. In comparison, Amsterdam is much more tightly-packed and chaotic. However, they both share many similarities beyond a shared cultural and ethnic background.</p>
<p>Rotterdam’s history is plagued by war, with the Battle of Rotterdam nearly wiping out most of its residential buildings. This nearly blank slate paved the way to massive amounts of regrowth and modern city development.</p>
