“One Vote Away”: Conservatives and the Myth of a Liberal Supreme Court

But it’s not just Ted Cruz. Perhaps the un-Cruziest Republican in the Senate, Mitt Romney, announced his support of allowing President Trump to name a replacement for Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the grounds that the Court has been liberal for too long. “My liberal friends have over many decades gotten very used to the idea of having a liberal court, and that’s not written in the stars,” Romney claimed. “It’s also appropriate for a nation, which is, if you will, center-right to have a court which reflects a center-right point of view.”

Both Cruz and Romney are working from the same script, which has dominated the conservative movement for decades. The narrative goes like this: The Supreme Court has been taken over by liberals who have had a lock on the Supreme Court for years. These liberals are “activist judges” who don’t respect the Founders or our rights, and they have been slowly chipping away at the Constitution for years. They have come so far that we are about to lose our Republic, and the only way to stop them is to vote Republican. This entire narrative is nonsense.
