The Carrington Event of 1859

Richard Carrington was an amateur astronomer who lived in London. On 1st September 1859 he went to his private observatory shortly before noon intending to sketch sunspots.

However, he was to see something that was entirely new to him. He described it as two patches of intensely bright and white light. This was also witnessed by another astronomer, Richard Hodgson.

What they had seen was a massive solar flare that only lasted a few minutes. However, the particles that were hurled towards Planet Earth would cause the greatest recorded geomagnetic storm in history.
