Motability, and the ‘free’ car myth

Motability is one of the most useful schemes available to disabled people in the UK. To my knowledge it is unique, and it tackles the issue of disabled transport head-on by allowing people to choose a vehicle that suits their needs in terms of size and features, and installing adaptions that make it possible for the person to use it, whether that’s an electric hoist for a wheelchair in the boot (trunk, for our US friends), hand controls for those who can’t use pedals, or adapted seating to make it easier to get in and out.

Readers who are regular users of X (Twitter) may occasionally have seen tweets suggesting that disabled people in the UK get free cars. This is not true, but it plays nicely into the narrative that disabled people are benefit scroungers who cost far more than they are worth and somehow get special treatment for little more than a well-timed sneeze.
