Buying a house in the Netherlands (in a nerdy way)

If you are like me, you might get overwhelm when having to make big decisions such as buying a house. In such cases, I always like to go for a data driven approach, that will help me find an optimum solution. This involves two steps. First, we need to gather as much data as we can. And second, we need to define a metric for success.

Gathering data of housing prices in Netherlands requires some effort. I got the housing prices from funda.nl. A caveat is that the asking prices in the website are not the prices to which the houses were actually sold. Asking price is also not obviously bias towards under or over selling price, so I’m not able to correct for it. This is what generally happens when dealing with real data, it is always far from perfect.
