Becoming Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson

We became the person that was invited to the interview even though the company knew it had a preferred candidate. We became the woman at work who despite being disrespected had to calmly state her case. We became her with tears in our eyes, the countless times we wanted to scream but had to represent against the stereotype of the “angry black woman.”

We were Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson in full view of the world. A world that already has an opinion of us before we step into the room. A world that uses microaggressions to demean us in an attempt to “put us in our place”. A world that is dismissive when we speak and searches for a moment of weakness to validate their thoughts. A world that tells us despite our qualifications that we are not good enough and at times, at their discretion, changes the rules mid sentence.
