Who was Jackson Barnett? A tale of greed, racism and tribal sovereignty in Indian Territory

Jackson Barnett’s story popped up on a Facebook thread about the Barnett family several years ago. I was familiar with the Barnetts through the story of Abigail Barnett and her Muscogee Creek allotment land that would create the present-day all-Black town of Boley, Oklahoma. My paternal grandfather was born and raised there and it is one of the 13 remaining Black towns in the state. My only point of reference to the Barnetts was through the story of what their land came to be. I did not realize that this family had a unique and extensive history in the territory and was split up on the Freedmen and By-Blood rolls during the Dawes Commission era.
