<p>THE DISPLAY OF THE FLAG of the <a href="https://hongkongfp.com/2023/10/01/hong-kongs-oldest-church-building-displays-chinas-flag-for-first-time-on-national-day/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">People’s Republic of China next to the pulpit in the Anglican Cathedral of Hong Kong for the first time this month</a> makes a handy and terminal book-end on the history of English colonialism in Asia. Flags in churches are complex things avoided by persons with pure eyes, but this choice marked the PRC’s annual National Day, the 74th anniversary of the founding of the country of which Hong Kong itself is now a Special Administrative Region. The cathedral predates the political arrangements significantly, dating from 1849; it is now one of three cathedrals in the three dioceses and one missionary area of the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (香港聖公會, HKSKH) or Holy Catholic Church in Hong Kong, the name of the local Anglican province.</p>
