Barcelonismo. What is it?

Futbol Club de Barcelona and ideologies are two things that go hand in hand. Rinus Michels, Johan Cruyff, Pep Guardiola — The Catalans have always welcomed new ideas and idealists with open arms, as long as it stands in the lines of progression of the already set-in-stone philosophies which the club believes in to this day. This set of principles that Barcelona believes in are said to be ‘Barcelonismo’, although it is not just a Barcelona-borne school of thought but rather the compilation and development of many small tactical views that are in agreement with each other.

Some may find it latent to rely on the same set of principle over such a long period of time, and it is. Being a Barcelona supporter myself; I have observed the principles of old get exposed in today’s modern game. But that’s where Barcelonismo innovates itself. Its a rigid set of beliefs but open to modifications in its details. That’s how it worked over decades and that's the only way in which it will work for years to come: development is key.
