Life Beyond — Atacama

San Pedro de Atacama, with its lack of humidity, rain, and light pollution, has stellar skies that offer a portal to wonder beyond the earth. The world’s leading astronomical observatories offer stargazing tours using their megatron telescopes. When we flew into Calama from Puerto Montt, that’s where we were headed. When compared to the lush green forests and the deep blue lakes of Puerto Varas, Calama seemed like a hell on earth.

San Pedro de Atacama is an hour and a half on the road from Calama. In that entire drive, there was barely any lifeform other than the innumerable cars headed that way. It was a no-moon day, the most important day of the month for the night show.
