“We are trying to hand over our expertise to the Arctic”
<p>At the Arctic Circle conference in Reykjavik, Iceland earlier this month, I interviewed Alar Karis, the President of Estonia. The Baltic republic and European Union and NATO member is a candidate for observer status in the Arctic Council. The Estonian government submitted its application in 2020, when it <a href="https://oslo.mfa.ee/events/estonia-as-an-aspiring-arctic-council-observer-state-the-arctics-inventive-neighbour/#:~:text=Estonia%20is%20the%20northernmost%20non,sustainable%20development%20of%20the%20Arctic." rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">proclaimed itself to be</a> “the northernmost non-Arctic country.” Although a nation of just 1.3 million people, Estonia has rich and deep-seated connections to the polar regions — and a short but critical border with Russia.</p>
