America in Crisis: Methadone Treatment Through an Addict’s Eyes

When Danny came into Lower East Side Services at 9 am after his first call to them, he spoke first with the director regarding intake services. Jamal ,the director, asked him specific questions about his usage, how often he used, in which way, and how much each time. After his interview with Jamal, the center required a urine test to prove opiates were currently in his system and his intentions are not to get and sell methadone. Since methadone treatment requires you to register with your insurance and attend either an outpatient or inpatient clinic, Lower East Side Services tests all incoming patients to be sure that they are actually addicted to opiates, and not just attempting to get a free prescription of methadone that they can sell on the street to make a profit. After confirmation of traces of opiates in his system, Danny had to sit down with both a psychiatrist and a medical doctor to undergo further mental and physical analysis and develop a treatment plan.
