Level Up Your Praise, and Other Actions for Allies

Earlier this month, I joined the “Managing Software Teams in Seattle” meetup to discuss how allies can give effective and equitable feedback. One of the topics we explored was whether there’s a role for allies to play in the 360-degree feedback process. (If you’re not familiar with this approach, it’s where a manager requests feedback on an employee from their peers, direct reports, and others they work closely with.)

My perspective? Definitely.

Stepping back, let’s acknowledge that members of underrepresented groups can feel they need to be “twice as good” as others to achieve the same levels of success, and research shows that this is not far off.
