Climbing the Mount of Angels

Is there anything more sublime than watching the sunrise from a mountainside? It is a motif that occurs again and again in art and literature from around the world.

This summer, I stayed in a cottage on Mynydd Carningli, a mountain in Pembrokeshire, whose name translates from Welsh as the Mount of Angels. It is a reference to St Brynach, a local saint who angels transported to Heaven from the mountain’s summit.

Ascending the mountain early one morning felt like a journey to another world, perhaps not Heaven, but the ancient land of the druids who once roamed the hillsides and gorges of Wales’ wild places.
