It has a chemical composition of iron sulfide (FeS2). It is commonly found in sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks.
Pyrite is often associated with other minerals, such as quartz (SiO2), calcite (CaCO3), and pyrrhotite (Fe(1-x)S).
It is a brittle mineral that can easily break into small pieces. Its hardness is 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
