What is Yagnopaveetam and who wears it?

Yagnopaveetham or as commonly called Janew is a holy thread that represents purity; the one that has emerged along with Brahma (Prajapathi) at the time of creation; that which bestows life (longevity) and prominence; the one that is sacred, clean and spotless; and the one which confers on to the wearer both knowledge and power. One Yagnopaveetham, also known as ‘the thread of sacrifice’, comprises nine threads, in which each three threads are uniquely split by a knot. It is not incidentally that it’s called the ‘thread of sacrifice’ for it spells it to the wearer who has to honour it. This thread has been controversial as many relegated it to Brahmins who were the elected custodians of it given their caste and main responsibilities to do rituals and acquire knowledge of the sacred scriptures.
