Exodus from Prison: A Woman’s Struggle to Start Her Life
<p>The “Broken Hearts” rally on Valentine’s Day, 2022, when in the freezing cold about 100 people holding dozens of 40-inch-wide pink and fuscia boards with the words “85% MOTHERS” and “DON’T LEAVE WOMEN BEHIND” protested in front of City Hall for better jail conditions and more humane treatment for women and LGBTQ detainees at Rikers Island? C.R. was one of them. She wore all-black from bottom to top — hiking boots, cargo pants, hoody, cloth mask and beanie with the red and orange logo of the EXODUS Transitional Community, like a cluster of flames. She was plump and chunky, about 5’ 3’’, and she was shivering, but she remained standing along with others in a half-circle formed by the pinks and slogans and the anger that burst out from protesters’ lips. </p>
